🔍 Discovering the four colours of Périgord
When you think of the Périgord, you immediately think of its charming villages, its generous cuisine, and its unspoiled landscapes. But did you know that the Périgord comes in four colors? Black, White, Green, and Purple: each tells a story, reflects an identity, and reveals a unique facet of this magnificent region, which today corresponds to the Dordogne department.
From the Granges Indigo, located in the heart of the Périgord Noir, setting off to discover these four territories is a wonderful way to explore all the richness of our region.
🌳The Périgord Noir, a kingdom of forests and heritage
The Périgord Noir owes its name to the vast holm oak forests that cover its hills and, seen from afar, create a dark silhouette, especially in winter.
It is undoubtedly the most famous part of the department. It is home to some of the Dordogne's most beautiful treasures: the Vézère Valley, cradle of prehistory; the Dordogne Valley, with its majestic castles; and iconic villages like Sarlat-la-Canéda, Beynac-et-Cazenac, and La Roque-Gageac. It is also the land of black truffles, foie gras, and the gourmet markets that have made the region famous. 🏰 The White Périgord, land of stone and light. In the heart of the department lies the White Périgord, named for the light-colored limestone plateaus that characterize its landscapes. Its historic center is the city of Périgueux, famous for its Saint-Front Cathedral and Gallo-Roman remains. Here, the light reflects off the white stone of the buildings and cliffs, creating a soft and luminous atmosphere.
The White Périgord charms with its peaceful valleys, authentic markets, and rich architectural heritage.
🌿 The Green Périgord, a haven of unspoiled nature
In the north of the department, the Green Périgord owes its color to its abundant vegetation. Wetter than the rest of the Dordogne, it offers rolling landscapes where forests, meadows, rivers, and ponds alternate.
It's a paradise for nature lovers, hikers, and cyclists. Here you'll discover, among other things, the Périgord-Limousin Regional Natural Park, a true haven of biodiversity. The pace of life is particularly peaceful, ideal for recharging your batteries far from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. 🍷 The Purple Périgord, land of vineyards To the west, around Bergerac, lies the Purple Périgord. Its color naturally evokes that of ripe grapes and the famous vineyards that have shaped its landscapes for centuries. This bountiful land is renowned for its wines, its fortified towns (bastides), and the gentle way of life that reigns along the Dordogne River. Bergerac, Monbazillac, and Issigeac are among the must-see destinations in this region where heritage and gastronomy blend harmoniously. The vine-covered hills offer magnificent views throughout the year, particularly in autumn when the leaves are adorned with golden and purple hues. One territory, four identities: While these four colors help to better understand the diversity of the Périgord, they all share the same soul: a deep connection to nature, heritage, gastronomy, and the art of living. From Les Granges Indigo, you are ideally located to explore each of these facets. In just a few kilometers, you can travel from the deep forests of the Périgord Noir to the vineyards of the Périgord Pourpre, from the sun-drenched plateaus of the Périgord Blanc to the verdant landscapes of the Périgord Vert. Whatever color of the Périgord you wish to discover—Black, White, Green, or Purple—Les Granges Indigo is a great starting point. Above all, remember: the Périgord and Dordogne region is pure gold! So, which will be your favorite color?
